Two words: Crabfest 2017. You guys have no idea how excited I was to go and get my nom on. My mom and I go every year because the food’s delish yet affordable! We usually hit up the Red Lobster in Hanover, MD, but I took her to the location in Pittsburgh this time around since I was in town visiting. Good times for sure!
There were a lot of exciting plates to choose from: five brand new dishes + four classic crab entrees, AND on top of that, they were offering two brand new types of wild-caught crab (Dungeness and Southern King). Dungeness crab’s caught from the cold waters of the Pacific off the coast of North America and has a salty and sweet flavor – the claws and legs are the tastiest. Southern King is found primarily off the Pacific Coast of South America and is mild in flavor with a delicate texture. Whether it’s king crab sourced from the icy waters of Alaska or blue crab from the Atlantic Coast of North America, all of the crab served at Red Lobster is traceable to the source.
I always love getting their speciality cocktails so I couldn’t resist ordering the new Crabfest Cooler, a tropical blend of Malibu, Midori, Sour Mix and pineapple with a Blue Curacao Float. It was SUPER yummy, and I got to take my cup home! Pro tip: if you don’t want to deal with a sticky cup, just ask them to pack the glass for you separately.
My mom and I were hangry so we ordered an app to start. We typically get their stuffed mushrooms, but their three-cheese crab dip sounded amazing so we went with that this time. If you’re a fan of cheesy, warm goodness, this is an absolute must-try. It contains a creamy blend of crabmeat with cream cheese, mozzarella, and monterey jack, served with warm artisan bread.
As for entrees, there were SEVERAL amazing options (as mentioned previously). Some new ones were: Dueling Crab Legs, Crab Cakes and Crab-Oscar Salmon, Crab Lover’s Dream, Crabfest Ultimate Surf and Turf, Southern King Crab Leg Dinner, and Shrimp Topped Crab Cake Dinner.
It was a tough decision but after much thought – and yes, I mean it when I say “much thought” – I decided to get the Crab Lover’s Dream, featuring wild-caught North American Snow crab legs and king crab legs, paired with their signature crab linguini alfredo. I love, love, LOVE their crab alfredo so I couldn’t resist, plus I’m a sucker for king crab legs so it was the ideal combo! It came with two sides so I got coleslaw and steamed broccoli.
My mom wanted to try something new so she ended up ordering their Crab Cakes + Crab-Oscar Salmon – featuring shrimp-topped crab cakes and wood-grilled fresh Atlantic salmon with crab-hollandaise topping. As for sides, she went with mashed taters and a side salad with french dressing. I had a giant plate of my own so I didn’t sample anything of hers, but she was going on and on about how fresh everything was! Definitely not surprising in the slightest though – we always have a good time at Red Lobster.
Just look at all that food! Huge props to Red Lobster for giving us yet another fabulous meal with stellar service. It’s nice to know that the location in Pittsburgh is still as good as I remember! Definitely make sure you guys head on over to enjoy Crabfest with your fams, too, and let me know how you enjoy it all! Happy eating, everyone.
