Hey friends, it’s time for another recap post. I know I told you I’d be doing more non-food stuff in the DMV area, but almost everything’s food related this month, #sorrynotsorry. I’m really excited to update you all though. Expect tons of droolworthy noms on today’s latest.
Anju x Serpico Dinner
I love food SO much. It’s a huge part of my life, which is why most everything is going to be nom-related today. A few days ago, I got to attend the Anju x Serpico collab dinner, and it was absolutely amazing.
For those of you unfamiliar with Peter Serpico, he’s a James Beard award winning chef who’s based in Philly. He’s known for his global cuisine, and his innovative dishes keep locals and tourists alike coming back for more.
All I know is, I need to plan a trip to Philly soon because I need more Serpico in my life. And I’m happy to inform you guys that I finally got to try his infamous scallop dish, and FYI it was exquisite.
Served in a spicy whipped buttermilk with poppy seeds and chives, this dish was everything I wanted and then some. He made four dishes total for the occasion, and both his KorAm Lasagna and honey butter hashbrowns were close seconds for me.
I hear awesome things about the Philly food scene, but I’ve only been there once or twice for concerts. I’m definitely planning on making a trip to explore before my baby cousin graduates from med school. She’s been there for the last few years so I have no excuse. Comment with your fave restaurants in the city of brotherly love so I know where to go the next time I visit.
Plant Nite Fun
I’m big into arts and crafts so I was thrilled when @fleetstreetwriteup agreed to do plant nite with me. This was a yaymaker event, and I’m not sure if you’re familiar with them, but they do all sorts of cool stuff like paint nite, candle making class, build-a-ukelele and more.
I saw that Groupon had a deal for $10 off so I purchased that before getting my plant nite ticket on their site. I thought I was being sneaky, but turns out, they have some bullshit fee they attach at checkout so it ended up being the same price it would’ve been sans coupon. I hate miscellaneous fees like that, but I had a lot of fun and I’d happily pay to go to another plant nite.
To be honest, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. I think the total was like $37, and that included a pot (depends on what class you go to), 3 super cute succulents, plastic figurines like unicorns and dinosaurs, moss, rocks and other garden-like decor. I highly recommend going, and it’s great for people of all ages.
Celebrating Sous Vide Day with Cuisine Solutions
I’m not sure if you remember, but the fine folks at Cuisine Solutions invited me to tour their headquarters in Sterling, VA a while back – I wrote a longgggg post about it here if you missed it.
Well, they invited me to join them at Estuary for a brunch experience unlike any other, and I very happily agreed. Talk about celebrating international sous vide day in style!
They had star chefs like Kyle Connaughton (executive chef/owner at SingleThread, a 3 Michelin starred restaurant in NorCal) and Carla Hall slingin’ dishes at stations, and it was definitely one of the best food events I’ve attended in the DC area.
I had to leave early so I didn’t get to try everything, but I highly recommend purchasing a ticket next year. They donate all proceeds to charity, and you’ll have an amazing time eating and drinking to your heart’s content – there’s a ton of food, and on top of chef stations, they have a giant spread with breads, pastries and other desserts.
They also had an open bar with wine and champagne along with several sous vide cocktails, which was really cool. Here’s a pic of some of my personal favorite dishes from the event!
Checking Out Gravitas
Very happy that I finally got to check this place out! Located in Ivy City, this gem of a restaurant recently got their first Michelin star, and lemme tell you, it’s so well deserved. Chef Matt Baker and his culinary team are killing the game. I got to try a handful of his dishes, and it all just made me want to go back and experience the full tasting menu in all its glory.
On a random note, I was really happy, albeit surprised, to see chef Kyle Knaub there. I actually met him while I was covering LaoWich for Nomtastic Foods a while back so I knew dessert was going to be lit even before I got to taste it, lol. Talk about edible art, his plates were almost too beautiful to eat.
Favorites included their parsnip and apple velouté, their poached scallops, their miso glazed sablefish, and their grapefruit parfait. That was a really long list but sorry not sorry.
Taco Tuesday + Drag Bingo
It’s no secret that I love a bomb deal, especially when it involves killer Mexican food. I recently checked out drag bingo at Taqueria Del Barrio, and I discovered that they had an awesome taco Tuesday special. Trust me when I say you can’t even begin to imagine my glee.
Located in Petworth at 821 Upshur Street NW, this Mexican eatery gives you 3 gringo tacos (hard shell noms with ground beef, lettuce, cheese and tomato) + two margaritas or a beer & shot combo for $15. How sweet is that? I’ll definitely be back in the future to take advantage…again. They’re also known for their drag brunches so that’s on my list as well! Have any of you been?
Alright friends, that’s it for today’s recap! I hope you enjoyed reading all about my January. For more adventures, check out this tab and make sure to follow on instagram! I’m fairly active on stories so come say hi. Sending lots of love from Pittsburgh – until next time, friends.
