A long while back – it legit feels like ages now – my dear friend, David Ortiz (aka @dcfoodfreak) took me to minibar for one of THE BEST meals I’ve ever had. It was honestly lifechanging. And I know that sounds super dramatic, but that meal impacted me deeply, like down to my very core, and I still look back so fondly on that evening.
Fast forward several years. My favorite human informs me that he’s never been, and we see that they’re having a special collab between barmini x minibar? How could we resist! I don’t know how long “One Night in Tokyo” is happening, but y’all need to go ASAP.
This unique snack tasting’s inspired by Japan, and you have the option of ordering drinks a la carte. I don’t typically get cocktails – I’m not a huge drinker – but I couldn’t leave barmini without getting at LEAST 2 to try.
Tickets are $75 per person, and it’s about $90 something with tax + tip. And FYI, you prepay in full ahead of time. And I know $90 can seem hefty if you’re not big into fine dining, but it’s actually SUPER reasonable for minibar since their usual tasting menu’s $500+…which BTW, I would happily pay for on a special occasion.
There were 8 courses total, and I loved each and every one.
- kampachi seaweed taco
- live scallop chip
- wagyu tartare on shiso tempura
- japanese mushroom air bread
- enoki ramen
- roasted eel and foie steam bun
- breakfast in hokkaido
- matcha donut + cherry blossom marshmallow
Everything’s pictured, in order, with the exception of the enoki ramen. It was actually my least favorite dish of the bunch, and the photo was just “eh” so I omitted it from today’s post. As mentioned, everything was delightful, but I had favorites for sure. The wagyu tartare? RIDICULOUS. The Japanese mushroom air bread? SO GOOD I COULD CRY. The breakfast in hokkaido dessert? UNBELIEVABLE.
As for drinks, we shared several between the two of us, but my favorite was the Apollo (honey vodka, lemon, mancino vermouth bianco, elderflower, ginger). I’m BIG into ginger so this is pretty much my idea of a perfect cocktail. Plus it came in a rocket with dry ice so the presentation was crazy cool! I mean, who wouldn’t enjoy sipping this beverage?
Easily one of the best meals I’ve had all year. I’m not sure when minibar’s opening back up again, but I can’t wait to go back in when they do. I have a few restaurants I reallllly want to go to before the year ends, and that’s on the list, along with Inn at Wash, Per Se, Alinea, Atomix, Cote, and Three Blacksmiths.
